The Final Salute: Reflections through Base Titanium's Legacy
On 31st December 2024, Base Titanium formally shut down its active mining operations in Kenya with a grand Water Gun Salute - an incredible curtain close to a decade of sustainable mining in Kenya. As I viewed the shared photos of the beautiful water arcs created by the very familiar mining guns, I ended up getting so emotional not just because it was my former workplace for about 500 days, but because it had become a home, a training ground and a place where despite great challenges, my dreams as a young mining engineer had become a reality.

It’s 6:30 p.m. on a Saturday and I am just chilling after a day at the beach. I am scrolling through my Whatsapp trying to read the messages that I had starred during the week. Life in the “bundus” is super busy and I chose to schedule some items for the weekend with less pressure.

The Two Minions In The Mines
In the winding corridors of Alliance Girls High School, I met Aisha, the tiny Coasterian girl with very fluent swahili, unruly hair (at that time🤣) and a powerful loud voice (hehe, she could literally command a whole troop!). We both struggled with the extremely low temperatures in Kikuyu cause we both hailed from hot areas of the country.
